Harrogate Town 4 - 0 Barnoldswick Town

Harrogate Town cruised into the third round of the West Riding County Cup on Tuesday night with a 4-0 win over Barnoldswick Town.

Wayne Brooksby did the damage to the North West Counties visitors with a hat-trick which included a sensational curled opener after 18 minutes.

Brooksby added two more from the spot as the visitors were reduced to ten men when substitute John Beckwith handled Tom Platt’s shot.

Jordan Robertson added a fourth for Town who will host Campion AFC in the third round of the competition.

As expected Simon Weaver made a whole host of changes with Danny Ellis, Luke Shiels, Lewis Turner, Andi Thanoj and Jack Emmett returning to the starting line-up.

Warren Burrell created the first opening of the night when the midfielder fed Turner in behind the visitors defence only for Jordan Gidley to beat away the effort.

There was nothing the Barnoldswick stopper could do about Brooksby’s strike though as the winger curled into the top corner 18 minutes in.

Thanoj almost made it two minutes later when the midfielder smashed Emmett’s low cross just past the post.

Town were beginning to control the game and struck the woodwork on the half hour mark as Tom Platt’s header from a corner connected with the cross bar.

A second goal eventually arrived in the 33rd minute when Brooksby was brought down inside the area by Gidley and coolly found the bottom right corner from 12 yards.

Despite the home side’s first half dominance, Peter Crook was called into action to keep his clean sheet intact in the first action of the second half as the stopper tipped Joseph Gaughan’s 30 yarder over the bar.

Town were then awarded a second penalty of the evening when substitute John Beckwith blocked Tom Platt’s shot with an arm and was shown a straight red card for his offence.

Brooksby stepped up and completed his hat-trick smashing into the opposite corner to his first spot-kick.

Gidley then pulled off a heroic double save to keep the score at three as the stopper first denied Emmett’s drive before blocking Platt’s follow up effort.

The North West Counties sides’ best chance fell to Gaughan 18 minutes from time, but Barnoldswick’s number 11 couldn’t hit the target when give space 12 yards out.

Town nearly found a fortunate fourth in the 83rd minute when Turner’s left wing cross clipped the face of the cross bar on the way through the six yard box.

The fourth and final goal arrived five minutes from time as substitute Robertson peeled off his marker and dispatched his effort in off the far post.
