Town 2-1 Accrington - George Thomson strikes late winner in Boxing Day win

26 December 2023

George Thomson's stoppage time winner secured three Boxing Day points for Town who made it three victories in a row with a 2-1 success over Accrington Stanley at The EnviroVent Stadium.

Stanley 'keeper Joe Walsh had been in fine form in the first half to keep his side level in the first half, setting the scene for Nolan to open the scoring.

Muldoon met George Thomson's free kick at the far post to ensure the lead only lasted a few minutes, before another set piece late on decded the outcome.

Matty Foulds' delivery found Abraham Odoh who picked out George Thomson to blast the ball past Walsh and seciure all three points.

Simon Weaver made one change from his side's win at Grimsby as Anthony O'Connor returned to the heart of defence, while there was a place for fit again Sam Folarin on the bench.

It was Accrington who would force the first save of the encounter when Ben Woods tried his luck from range, but James Belshaw was equal to it.

Joe Walsh then showed what he could do at the other end, reacting quickly to keep out George Thomson's sweetly struck volley.

Town nearly got themselves ahead in style again shortly after as Matty Foulds' bicycle kick looked destined for the top corner, but again Walsh turned the effort away.

The best chance of the half fell to Josh Woods who had intercepted Stephem Dooley's pass to go one-on-one with James Belshaw, but the Town stopper came out on top.

Walsh was involved again in keeping the score goalless just before the half time whistle as he denied Jack Muldoon who was looking to turn Thomson's effort into the net.

The vistors improved after the restart and took the lead in the 57th minute from an attack down the right hand side, low cross into the box and Nolan finish.
The lead lasted just seven minutes though as Town were awarded a free kick just outside the area that Thomson floated to the far post, where Muldoon needed no second invitation to head home from close range.
A close range stop from Belshaw two minutes later kept Town's lead intact after a long throw was nodded towards goal by Nolan.
Both sides were desperate for a winner, but it looked like goalkeepers would come out on top withb Belshaw making another crucial save just seconds before Walsh clawed the ball away from the feet of Levi Sutton.
Deep into stoppage time Thomson popped up with the decisive moment as Odoh squared Foulds' free kick into the midfielder's path to smash home!
