Morecambe 2-2 Town - Stoppage time equaliser denies Town New Years' Day win at Morecambe

1 January 2024

Town were denied a New Years' Day win at Morecambe as Jacob Bedeau struck in second half stoppage time.

Jack Muldoon had given his side a half time lead, but Morecambe hit back in the second half through Jordan Slew's long range effort.

With seven minutes to play, up stepped George Thomson to fire home his tenth goal of the season, though with only a few minutes remaining, Bedeau converted at the back post from a corner to earn his side a share of the points.

Simon Weaver made two changes from Friday night's line-up as Josh Falkingham and Sam Folarin replaced Josh March and Matty Daly.

Town's top scorer Thomson was the first to threaten the goal, but his free kick nestled into the side netting.

The hosts were then forced into a double change late in the first half as both JJ McKiernan and Adam Mayor were forced off injured, with Tom Bloxham and Jake Taylor taking their places.

Just as the sides looked to be heading in level Muldoon got his name on the scoresheet to give Town a half time lead. The hosts failed to deal with a Town attack leaving Muldoon with an easy finish from close range.

Thomson started the second half by cutting inside from the right and seeing his left footed shot saved by Smith.

A long range effort then produced an equaliser for the hosts minutes later as Slew's touch took the ball out his feet and allowed the Morecambe man to arrow the ball into the bottom left corner.

The home side could have taken the lead just before the hour mark, but Captain Farrend Rawson couldn't find the required contact on his volley to beat Belshaw.

Morecambe were applying late pressure looking for a winning goal, but found Anthony O'Connor at his best against his former side to head Yann Songo'o's effort off the line.

With seven minutes to go a clever turn on the half way line from Muldoon sent Rawson the wrong way and allowed Town to work the ball right to Folarin, he teed up Thomson on the edge of the area to calmly slot home his tenth of the season.

Town were denied all three points in stoppage time as a Morecambe corner was swung in to the far post, where Bedeau was able to bundle home.
