Armstrong and Odoh finishes ensure Town's pre-season ends with a win

28 July 2023

Luke Armstrong and Abraham Odoh both found the target again as Town ended their 2023/24 pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win away at Hartlepool.

Armstrong had converted Toby Sims' cross to put Town ahead in the 24th minute, but Anthony Mancini levelled for the hosts ten minutes into the second half.

Abraham Odoh would turn out to be the match winner though, netting his second goal of pre-season in equally impressive style with a low finish across the 'keeper.

Simon Weaver was able to bring Toby Sims, Rod McDonald and James Daly back into his squad after the trio had missed recent pre-season fixtures with minor injuries.

The hosts started brightly looking to test the new pairing of McDonald and Anthony O'Connor at the back, but couldn't conjure anything to trouble Mark Oxley in the opening exchanges.

Hartlepool were doing a good job of keeping Luke Armstrong quiet early on, but Toby Sims found the perfect service for his teammate in the 24th minute, swinging in a cross that Armstrong was able to prod over the line to give his side the lead.

John Askey's side tried to find an equaliser before the half, but couldn't break down Town's backline with Sims making a series of blocks to ensure his side went into half time with a narrow advantage.

Town started the second half brightly with Muldoon going close, but found themselves pegged back after ten minutes of play when a poor clearance was capitalised upon by Mancini, who powered into the back of the net.

It was a good response to conceding from Weaver's side who twice had the ball in the net in the next ten minutes, though on both occasions the linesman raised his flag to disallow Armstrong adding to his tally.

Town's next effort would turn out to be the winning effort as Odoh claimed his second goal of pre-season. The attacker, one of six changes madeon the 71 minute mark, played a one-two with Muldoon before firing low across the Pools 'keeper.
