Port Vale 0 Town 0 - Our First Visit to Vale Park Ends All Square

Town returned from their first trip to Vale Park with a point after an impressive defensive showing kept out second place Port Vale.

David Worrall went closest for John Askey's side, clipping the upright after the hour mark though impressive displays from Will Smith and Connor Hall ensured chances were few and far between.

Simon Weaver made one change from Tuesday night's FA Trophy Semi-Final success as Mark Beck replaced Jack Muldoon, who missed ourt with a minor muscle injury.

In the opposite dugout, Askey named the same starting XI that overcame Exeter 2-0 in their last fixture, with Mark Cullen and Devante Rodney forming a dangerous looking attack.

Joe Cracknell kept his place in goal for Town as James Belshaw continued his recovery from a thumb injury, though it wasn't the best start for Town's number 13 as Cullen latched onto a mis-hit clearance and almost capitalised inside the first minute.

The hosts had the ball in the net after 12 minutes as David Worrall looped a header into the far corner, only to be penalised for a push on Warren Burrell.

Rodney had created the opening with a left wing cross and was at it again in the 27th minute, swinging a delivery onto the head of Captain Leon legge who headed just wide.

With under ten minutes of the half to go, Town produced the best football of the afternoon so far as Josh Falkingham released Ryan Fallowfield, who found Aaron Martin with a first time cross, only for Scott Brown to keep out the striker's header.

Mark Beck went close to opening the scoring from the resulting corner, but couldn't quite guide George Thomson's header between the posts.

Town finished the half strongly as Martin peeled away from his marker and headed towards goal, though it turned out to be a comfortable take for Brown as the first half finished goalless.

With chances few and far between at the start of the second half, the hosts missed a golden opportunity to take the lead just past the hour mark as Nathan Smith got to the byline and pulled back for Worrall, whose finish on the stretch clipped the base of the post on its way behind.

Town were being forced to defend for large periods as Askey's side looked for a third win from three in the league, though an excellent Will Smith block prevented Tom Conlon's strike going any further as the Town backline continued to hold firm.

Smith and his centre back partner Hall were heavily involved in the closing stages as Vale poured men forward, though Town stood firm to continue their unbeaten start to League Two.

Martin almost provided a dream ending for Town in stoppage time, but headed Thomson's corner just wide as the contest ended goalless.
