Southport Preview

Harrogate Town travel to Southport on Tuesday night hoping to make it four away wins on the bounce.

Saturday’s five goal haul at Telford saw Simon Weaver’s side return to the top of the league, and remain the division’s top scorers with 29 goals in ten games.

Town have suffered just one loss in their last 12, and are unbeaten in seven matches away from home, though come up against a Southport side who have adjusted well to life back in the National League North.

After seven years in non-league’s top tier, Alan Lewer’s side sit seventh in the early standings, though their last two results will be a cause for concern for Yellows fans.

A 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Stockport followed by a 3-0 first home defeat of the season to Kidderminster has somewhat undone the early good work by Southport’s new manager, though that defeat is the only one at Haig Avenue in the last seven outings.

Five wins from their opening ten games has been a good return, though just one win in five and four points from a possible 15 is a run of form The Sandgrounders will be desperate to put an end to.

The Port have won the last four meetings between the sides, albeit the most recent coming in 2010, but will have to improve on a defence that has shipped the most goals in the top half to extend that run to five.

Tuesday night’s hosts have been kind enough to extend an offer of gratitude for home supporters to away fans, and will be giving away 50 free tickets to travelling Town supporters, as well as a further 50 for £4.

Jake Wright’s unfortunate injury at New Bucks Head means Town look set to be without four senior strikers as the Sheffield United loanee joins Louie Swain, Simon Ainge and Dominic Knowles on the sidelines.
