Town 0 - 3 Oldham - Town hit by Latics triple blow

Town suffered a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Oldham Athletic in their penultimate home game of the season at The Envirovent Stadium.

After securing EFL status for next season with the 2-1 home win against Bradford City on Saturday they went down to an early goal from Alfie McCalmont before second-half strikes from Dylan Bahambula and substitute Goerge Blackwood.

Town responded well to the early setback of conceding in just the seventh minute but falling further behind less than a minute after the break was a step too far.

Town were forced into making one change as a result of Dan Jones injury that was sustained in the win over Bradford City. Mitch Roberts came in for just the second start of his loan spell from Birmingham City.

The visitors also made one change with Nicky Adams replacing Dylan Farge in the side that was defeated 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller against Morecambe.

Having struck the winner that earned Town all three points at the weekend, Josh McPake almost netted in the first minute when his direct run saw him unleash an effort from the edge of the area that was deflected wide.

Town fell behind soon after though when McAlmont latched onto a clearance from a Latics corner and arrowed his strike from his distance perfectly off the underside of the crossbar passed thr helpless Joe Cracknell.

Having fallen behind Town rebounded positively with a Muldoon shot that was saved by Laurie Walker reward for a sustained spell of pressure.

Town almost got themselves on level terms on 26 minutes when a George Thomson cross-field ball found Roberts whose first-time low cross was sliced clear by Carl Piergianni.

The visitors threat from the trio of McAlmont, Bahambula and Conor McAleny was never far away and having cleared the initial danger Cracknell then had to be at his very best to react from Cameron Borthwick-Jackson’s point blank header from close range.

And on the stroke of half-time Cracknell reprised the save when he turned away McAleny’s strike to ensure Town went in at the break only one goal in arrears.

But barely a minute into the second half Town found themselves further behind. A long ball set Bahambula free behind the home defence and despite Cracknell’s smart save the Frenchman was on hand to hit home for his sixth goal of the season.

Against a defence that had conceded 72 goals coming into the fixture Town would never be out of the contest and McPake was becoming increasingly influential. After winning a free-kick on the edge of the area, Thomson stepped up and forced Walker into a smart save.

With an eye on shoring up their advantage the visitors made a double change on 72 minutes with McAlmonth and McAleny replaced by Blackwood ad Garritty.

Simon Weaver responded by switching out Jon Stead for Mark Beck but hopes of a Town comeback were dashed seconds later when Cracknell’s heavy touch resulted in his clearance cannoning back off substitute Blackwood to cap the victory.

The Town boss utilised his full complement of substitutes – as did opposition boss Keith Curle – with Ryan Fallowfield, Ed Francis, Jay Williams and Brendan Kiernan all introduced in the final ten minutes, but a McPake effort aside the Latics were able to comfortably close the game out.

Town are back on the road this coming weekend with a trip to Carlisle United before their final home game at the end of the month against Cambridge United.
