Town’s unbeaten run came to a halt as goals from James Jennings and JJ Hooper gave Wrexham a 2-0 win at The CNG Stadium.
The visitors struck in either half to kill off a Town side that had come into the game full of confidence on the back of six consecutive wins in all competitions.
On the back of last Saturday’s 2-0 win at Ebbsfleet, Simon Weaver opted to field an unchanged line-up and the home side came out showing plenty of intent and were camped in the Wrexham half in the early minutes. Jon Stead went closest during this time with his low shot testing Rob Lainton in the opposition goal.
Town were stunned after 11 minutes though as a moment of quality from Jennings gave the visitors the lead.
His perfectly struck free-kick from 25 yards arrowed into the top corner to give James Belshaw no chance and marked the first time he had conceded in over seven and a half hours of football.
Town immediately hit back though with Jack Diamond’s effort from the edge of the area spectacularly tipped over by Lainton.
Warren Burrell then saw his header unluckily crash back off the foot of the post and Stead’s turn and shot forced Lainton into another save with Town dominating the game.
As the half drew to a close Town were served warning of Wrexham’s attacking threat when Hooper unleashed a thunderous effort that forced Belshaw, who this week signed a contract extension through to the summer of 2023, into a save low to his left to keep the deficit at one goal.
Town struggled to replicate the level of the play after the break, finding themselves continually frustrated by their opponents approach having got themselves the lead.
Both Hooper and Luke Young threatened the goal in the early stages of the second half before Weaver gave a home debut to Kian Harratt. No sooner had he stepped on to the pitch though than when Hooper’s pace fashioned an opportunity for himself that he finished with aplomb.
Town introduced Brendan Kiernan with 15 minutes remaining in a bid to create some attacking impetus. There was no shortage of effort, but aside from his close range shot with five minutes remaining they came up empty handed and suffered a first defeat in 2020.
