U19s eliminate Stockport on penalties

Town are through to the next round of the cup after a penalty shoot out victory over Stockport after a 2-2 draw at The CNG Stadium, a typical game of two halves.

After conceding early on, a powerful Harry Boyer header pulled Town level, before Joe Gosling edged Phil Priestley and Josh Walsh’s side ahead.

Stockport, led by first team Manager Jim Gannon, got themselves right back into it though, forcing the tie to penalties, where two Leon Heppel stops helped Town to victory.

“We started off very slow and soon found ourselves one down from some poor defending.” Said Manager Priestley

“Saying that, just before the opening goal we had a great opportunity from a set piece with Latimer putting his chance over the bar.

“After the goal we defended much better and went in 1-0 down at half time.

“We started the second half much better and had several opportunities in the first ten minutes, with Gosling and Boyer coming close.

“Some very good build up play and a great cross from Lucas Sefton was finished off with a towering header from Boyer to get us back level.

“The next 15 mininutes saw some good solid defending and passing play leading to a wonder 25 yard strike from Gosling.

“In The last five minutes we were put under a lot of pressure, leading to us conceding from a set piece and taking the game to penalties.

“The man of the moment in the shoot-out was our goalkeeper Leon Heppell who made two fantastic saves to help take us through to the next round.”
