Town Defeated in FA Youth Cup

23 September 2017

Harrogate were eliminated from the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday night after a valiant performance against a full time York City outfit.

The first ten minutes saw York have a lot of the ball, and the hosts went a goal up when a long ball was crossed into the box before being tucked away into the top corner.
Going behind seemed to spark Harrogate into life though as Sam Phoenix ran onto a Sam Barker through ball, though his lob could not get over the York keeper.
James Richardson's work down the left hand side caught the eye as a great run ended in a shooting position, but some good defending stopped him getting a shot off.
Louis Verity, Carl Robinson and Barker's performances in the middle made it difficult for York to play the football they wanted.
The hosts' second eventually came when another long ball was flicked on by City's striker, before his partner ran through and finished well when one on one.
Harrogate's best chance of the game came when Richardson's ball across the box, after more good work down the left, was met by Connor Weal arriving late at the back post, however Weal could not keep his shot down and the ball went narrowly over.
Weal was almost in again after latching on to the end of a loose back pass, but York's ‘keeper came closed down the angle well and the ball somehow bounced out for a goal kick.
Harrogate were made to pay for missed chances when the York full back whipped an excellent free kick into the far corner to put Town 3-0 down at half-time.
York's fourth goal came when a corner was met in the box and a deflected shot eluded Jordan Myers in goal.
Myers had to go off shortly after when a goal mouth scramble saw him damage his neck, and despite trying to play on, Town's stopper was forced off.
York got their fifth when the hosts' striker got to the ball before Harry Stanley and rolled into an empty net.
Our Under 17 Team will be back in action on Sunday when Pontefract STJ visit The CNG Stadium (Kick-off 10am).
