Southport Preview

11 April 2018

After last weekend's derby win, Town return to The CNG Stadium on Saturday where they face Kevin Davies' Southport.

The former England and Bolton striker took charge of the Sandgrounders in October and currently sees his side sit 14th in the National League North; following seven seasons in the National League.

Saturday's opponents are ten points away from the play-off places and six points clear of the drop zone, but will be desperate to bounce back from three successive league defeats.

Davies' side were due to have the chance to do that at Blyth Spartans on Tuesday night, but the contest fell victim to the weather meaning Southport's last result was a narrow 1-0 defeat to Nuneaton.

Before the hat-trick of defeats, The Sandgrounders had won five in a row and impressively scored three on each occasion, partially thanks to the league's top scorer Jason Gilchrist, who contributed six of the 15.

Town on the other hand remain three points off the top of the table following victory at Bootham Crescent and have now lost just one of their last 10 matches.

Simon Weaver's side need eight goals in their remaining four matches to reach 100 National League North goals for the season and have won eight of their last nine league fixtures at home.

The last meeting between the sides brought to an end a run of four Southport wins over Harrogate as Jordan Thewlis' hat-trick helped Town to a 4-1 win at Haig Avenue in September.

David Morgan was in the Town side that night, but could line up against the side he made three appearances for earlier in the season on Saturday.
