Nuneaton 2 Town 1

9 January 2018

Harrogate Town's Liberty Way hoodoo continued on Tuesday night as Simon Weaver's side suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Nuneaton.

The visitors' quest for a first victory at Nuneaton since 2007 was dealt a blow after 18 minutes as Jordan Nicholson fired home to give his side the lead.

Terry Kennedy levelled on the stroke of half time with a well taken finish from Joe Leesley's deep free kick, but Ashley Chambers' one on one finish 11 minutes after the interval proved to be decisive as Town could not come back from a goal down for the second time.

Weaver made one change from Saturday's 1-0 win at Chorley as Kennedy returned from suspension in place of Toby Lees.

The hosts were the first to register efforts on goal, both coming through Nicholson who first dragged just wide of the right post, before collecting Chambers' pull back and shooting into the arms of James Belshaw.

Nicholson didn't make the same mistake the third time he got a sight of goal, firing past Belshaw 18 minutes into the contest after Chambers' clever flick allowed Daniel Nti to find the goalscorer.

Town's first sight of goal came just before the half hour mark as Jack Emmett's shot bobbled up off goalkeeper Dean Lyness and fell to Leesley, though the winger's shot was off target.

Nicholson continued to threaten the Town goal, though was met by an impressive Belshaw save to keep the score at one nil on the 32 minute mark.

Weaver's side began to apply pressure to the Nuneaton back line towards the end of the half and got their reward in first half stoppage time when Kennedy finished Leesley's deep free kick at the back post.

Despite a better start to the second half than the first from Town, Nuneaton edged ahead for the second time as Chambers collected Nicholson's flick before racing through one on one and slotting home.

With just under 19 minutes to play, Thewlis had the chance to level the scores after Leesley's cross was only partially cleared, but the winger's left footed shot sailed over the cross bar.

Mark Beck was next to go close in yellow and black, but couldn't get enough contact on Leesley's low cross at full stretch to divert the ball into the goal.

Substitute Dom Knowles went agonizingly close to levelling in the 86th minute after Thewlis had found the attacker in the six yard box, but his touch got away from him and Nuneaton escaped.

Despite throwing Belshaw up to join the attack during seven minutes of time added on, Nuneaton held on to send Town to a first defeat of 2018.
