Salford City Preview

18 January 2018

Town travel to Salford City on Saturday as the National League North's top two go head to head.

A ninth away win for Simon Weaver's side would see the gap at the top of the table reduced to five with a game in hand, though defeat would see The Ammies open up an 11-point lead on their nearest rivals.

After last season's fourth placed finish and play-off semi-final defeat, the class of '92 owned club started the season as title favourites, and have delivered so far; winning 18 of their 26 games.

Salford's cause has been helped by top scorer Jack Redshaw whose 14 goals have seen Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson's side stay on track for a third promotion in four seasons.

A recent four match winless run for the leaders has been brought to a halt with back to back victories, with Morley claiming a move ‘back to basics' inspired victories over Darlington and Telford.

Three of Salford's four league defeats have come at The Peninsula Stadium with Darlington, Leamington and Chorley all taking maximum points from their visit.

Town will be desperate to become the fourth team to win at Salford this season, and travel with the second best away record and as the division's top scorers.

Recent meetings have seen the sides share the spoils after Salford won the reverse fixture earlier in the season, avenging Town's 3-0 victory at Moor Lane in the FA Trophy last season, though there has never been a home win in five meetings between the teams.

Last weekend's draw at St Albans' was Town's first away from home since August, but Weaver was thrilled with his side's response in Tuesday night's replay.

He said: “We were keen to put on a really strong show on Tuesday night in front of the home supporters and get them really up for it for what is going to be a really exciting Saturday and Tuesday double header of games against big clubs.”
