Town 4 Stockport 1

23 January 2018

Harrogate Town produced another outstanding attacking display at The CNG Stadium putting four past Stockport County to return to winning ways.

Jack Emmett opened the scoring with a low drive into the bottom left corner after 24 minutes, though Stockport hit back as Chris Smalley capitalised on a poorly cleared corner.

Home advantage was soon restored though as George Thomson produced a volley straight out of the top draw to end the half on a high.

Despite some early County pressure, Town added to their lead in the second half as Dom Knowles curled home his third goal in three games before Terry Kennedy ended the scoring with a trademark header from Joe Leesley's corner.

Simon Weaver made one change from Saturday's trip to Salford City as Ben Parker took the place of Louie Swain.

Both sides were limited to long range shots in the opening quarter of an hour with Knowles turning well before firing wide, moments before Jamie Stott's effort brought the first save of the evening from James Belshaw.

Just like at the league leaders on Saturday, Knowles was denied a goal by a spectacular save as Ian Ormson got down well to keep out the striker's powerful drive.

There was nothing the Stockport stopper could do four minutes later though as Emmett collected possession just inside the opposition half before driving towards goal and finding the bottom left corner via the post.

Ormson was in action again soon after, this time keeping out Simon Ainge's low shot after an incisive break away down the right, before catching Ryan Fallowfield's 30 yarder seconds later.

Despite Town applying all the pressure, County levelled with ten minutes of the half to play as, after a corner wasn't dealt with, Smalley struck the loose ball past Belshaw.

The visitors were level for just four minutes though as Thomson produced a sublime volley after Joe Leesley's free kick was only cleared towards the midfielder.

The final action of the half somewhat summed up the first 45 minutes as Ainge's powerful header was kept out by Ormson.

County made a bright start to the second half as James Ball twice burst through the middle towards goal in the first six minutes, the first occasion being met by a Belshaw save and on the second attempt dinking wide of the post.

Town soon reasserted their dominance though as Emmett's through ball was latched on to by Knowles, who cut back on his left foot and curled into the top corner.

It was four nine minutes later as, after Emmett's shot had been turned behind, Kennedy provided a trademark powerful header to Leesley's back post corner.

It could have been five in the dying stages had a penalty been awarded for what looked like a foul on substitute Jordan Thewlis, but the referee saw the incident differently and the score stayed at four.
