Town U19s 1 Burnley U17s 2

18 July 2018

A 90th minute goal denied Town's U19 side a win in their first ever match as Burnley's U17s ran out 2-1 winners at The CNG Stadium.

Sam Barker's well taken opener meant Town led for the majority of the game, though goals in the 83rd and 90th minute turned the tie around late on.

Josh Falkingham named four new faces in his starting line-up with Neil Patience, Harry Clark, Amari Dixon-Blair and Soni Fergus all featuring for the first time.

Danny Cadamarteri's side had the majority of possession early on, but were met by a resilient Town defence with Gus Steele performing well at the centre.

The first of the visitors chances arrived in the 22nd minute when Jordan Myers' clearance was picked up by Burnley's number nine, but the Town stopper recovered with a good save.

With 11 minutes to go until half time, Sam Barker finished off an excellent Town break with a first time finish into the top corner.

Neil Patience had played through Sam Clark, who held the ball up before running down the line and pulling back into the path of the midfielder.

Town started the second half well as shots from Barker and Patience forced blocks from the Burnley backline, though the visitors continued to enjoy the lion's share of possession with no clear chances to show for it.

Three minutes after the hour mark Myers made a terrific save to keep his clean sheet in tact, springing to his right to deny a header that looked destined for the bottom corner.

The visitors had a big chance to level in the 73rd minute, but couldn't take it as a one on one opportunity was put past the post.

Just as it looked like Town were going to claim the win, Burnley found an equaliser with 83 minutes on the clock as the visiting number 14 scrambled home a left wing cross.

Now with their tails up and smelling victory a quick counter attack allowed The Clarets to claim the win as number 13 provided a cool finish in the 90th minute.
