Gainsborough Trinity Preview

21 March 2018

Town welcome Gainsborough Trinity to The CNG Stadium on Saturday looking for a seventh straight home league win.

Simon Weaver's side go into the contest three points behind league leaders Salford, but with a better goal difference and a game in hand, while opponents Gainsborough sit 21st; three points from safety.

The Holy Blues said goodbye to Dave Frecklington in early February after a year under his stewardship and brought in Lee Sinnott to try and guide the club to safety.

Recent victory over Kidderminster has given hope to Trinity supporters, though defeat in Sinnott's other four matches, including a narrow loss at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday night, gives the former Bradford City man plenty to do in his side's eight remaining fixtures.

Saturday's opponents have not fared as well away from home this season having lost their last nine on their travels and collecting the least points in the National League North on the road.

Recent meetings between Town and Trinity have favoured the visitors though, with the last four meetings ending in away wins, most recently when The Holy Blues ended Town's FA Cup hopes with a 2-1 success.

That defeat was the last time Town have lost at The CNG Stadium, some 12 games ago, while no team has picked up more points over the last 15 matches than Weaver's side.

The last league meeting also ended in an away win as a late Terry Kennedy header saw Town come away with all three points after a nine-goal thriller at The Northolme.

The sides have alternated wins over the last six meetings, and if that pattern continues on Saturday, Town will be celebrating come 5pm.

Only North Ferriby have scored fewer times than Sinnott's side, but this fixture has a tendency to produce goals, having averaged more than five per game over the last three meetings.

Town have no fresh injury concerns going into the weekend, while Jordan Thewlis could feature against the side he spent the 2016/17 season with.
