Town 6 FC United of Manchester 0

10 March 2018

Town returned to the top of the National League North and recorded their biggest win of the season in the process beating FC United of Manchester 6-0 at The CNG Stadium.

Jack Emmett opened the scoring after just six minutes, before Liam Kitching's header on the hour mark put Town well in the ascendency.

George Thomson then produced the pick of the goals, finding the bottom corner from just outside the area to put his side 3-0 up at the interval.

The former FC United man claimed his second from close range with fifteen minutes remaining, before Jake Wright marked his return to the club with a fifth goal three minutes later.

Thomson then put the icing on a man-of-the-match performance, showing great feet before firing across goal to seal his hat-trick in stoppage time.

Simon Weaver named the same starting line-up for the fourth consecutive fixture, while Jake Wright and Ryan Fallowfield made the bench.

Town took the lead after just six minutes as Josh Falkingham's firm pass was helped behind the defence by Dom Knowles to the advancing Emmett, who coolly slotted past Lloyd Allinson.

Louie Swain twice went close to adding to Town's early lead in the exchanges that followed as first his shot was blocked by a crowd of bodies, moments before the left back shot over from 25 yards.

Town continued to create chances, but neither Knowles or John McCombe could get the right contact on Joe Leesley's crosses to double the advantage.

Leesley eventually created Town's second goal on the half hour mark as his deep free kick was headed in off the upright at the back post.

Seven minutes later former FC United midfielder George Thomson found the net against his former club as he punished a heavy defensive touch by firing first time into the bottom right corner from just outside the area.

The second half got off to a less eventful start, with Leesley's low cross collected by Allinson the only action of note, before FCUM Player/ Manager Tom Greaves introduced himself, Craig Linfield and Daniel Racchi from the bench after the hour mark.

Greaves' first involvement was to force a mistake out of the otherwise faultless Kitching that saw him one on one with James Belshaw, but the Town stopper kept his clean sheet in tact with his feet.

With a quarter of an hour remaining, Thomson claimed his second of the afternoon in slightly less spectacular fashion as Emmett's low cross fell to the midfielder's feet just a few yards out.

Three minutes later Jake Wright marked his return to the club with a goal, after being introduced in the 69th minute, the striker headed under Allinson from six yards out.

Thomson then put the icing on a man-of-the-match performance, showing great feet before firing across goal to seal his hat-trick in stoppage time.
