Leyton Orient 2 Town 0

19 April 2019

Harrogate Town's first trip to Brisbane Road to take on league leaders Leyton Orient ended in defeat with Josh Coulson's second minute header and Matt Harrold's stoppage time finish doing the damage.

A crowd of 6,665, the largest Town had ever played in front of in their 105-year history, saw Jordan Thewlis strike the woodwork in the second half and almost claim a point for his side.

The defeat leaves Town with a four point cushion between themselves and eighth place Ebbsfleet, with Gateshead set to visit The CNG Stadium on Easter Monday.

Simon Weaver made six changes from last Saturday's defeat to Boreham Wood, with Ryan Fallowfield, Jack Senior, Jack Emmett, Mark Beck, Thewlis and Lloyd Kerry all returning.

The first chance of the game fell the way of the hosts as the loose ball fell to Macauley Bonne who was denied by James Belshaw, with Liam Kitching keeping out the follow up.

Orient opened the scoring with the resulting corner though as Coulson glanced a header past Belshaw into the top right corner.

The hosts had the ball in the back of the net again in the 20th minute through Macauley Bonne, but the striker was ruled offside.

Town's first sight of goal came through the lively Thewlis who was making his first Town start since November and flashed a shot across goal moments after Orient's goal had been disallowed.

An entertaining first half ended with Thewlis collecting possession from Josh Falkingham and forcing O's stopper Dean Brill into a low save to keep his side ahead at the break.

Town went within inches of equalising on the hour mark when Thewlis broke the offside trap and rounded Brill, but couldn't squeeze his finish inside the post and saw the ball bounce clear.

The hosts reminded Town of their threat not long after as substitute Harrold headed James Brophy's corner wide.

Conceding the chance to Thewlis looked to kick Orient in to gear, with Belshaw pulling off a clever save to deny Marvin Ekpiteta who had expertly controlled a deep cross shot towards the bottom corner.

The chance for a point almost fell to Beck after a poor clearance from the Orient backline, but the striker couldn't arch his finish over Brill.

In almost a carbon copy of his earlier chance, Thewlis almost secured a point for his side with two minutes to go when rounding Brill, but this time seeing his finish cleared off the line by Coulson.

Orient added to their lead with almost the final action of an entertaining 90 minutes as Matt Harrold headed home from a corner to put the result beyond doubt.
