Fylde 0 Town 0

26 August 2019

Jon Stead saw what would have been his first Town goal, and the winning goal, chalked off late in the second half as Town were made to settle for a point against Fylde at Mill Farm.

The substitute striker had intercepted a back pass and finished well, only to see his effort ruled out in a contest where Town were twice denied by the woodwork.

Both Jack Muldoon and Warren Burrell to unfortunate to not claim their first goals of the season having both struck the frame of the goal.

Simon Weaver named the same squad that beat Stockport on Saturday, with newest addition Alex Bradley in the heart of midfield.

After a quiet opening, the game burst into life in the 20th minute when Muldoon hit a sweet effort goalwards, only to see the ball rebound off the inside of the post, with James Montgomery doing excellently to keep out  Bradley's follow up.

An alert James Belshaw was needed to keep the match goalless in the 26th minute as a loose ball broke to Matty Kosylo in acres of space just a few yards out, though before the Fylde man had time to plan his finish, Town's stopper was on hand to make the save.

While Fylde had the ball in the Town half for large periods, they weren't at their creative best with Kyle Jameson's improvised header the closest the hosts would come before the break.

Six minutes after the restart Bradley forced a fine save from Montgomery, striking a bouncing ball from outside the area that looked destined for the bottom corner, only to be palmed away.

As the contest went on both sides contined to have attempts on goal as Ryan Croasdale headed wide before Brendan Kiernan's free kick was caught.

Bradley's long range shooting continued to cause problems as his latest strike was fumbled, but claimed by Montgomery before substitute Stead could pounce.

Stead then thought he had put Town ahead after intercepting a back pass and coolly slotting past the 'keeper, only to have his celebrations cut short and the goal ruled out, for handball.

The Town attacks kept coming though, with Burrell's acrobatic overhead kick clipping the underside of the bar and falling the wrong side of the line.

That was the last chance Town would get to go home with three points and can feel hard done by not to have come away with a first victory over Fylde in 11 attempts.
