Chesterfield Preview

21 February 2019

Town make their first trip to The Proact Stadium on Saturday to take on Chesterfield, a club that finished in the League One Play-Offs just four seasons ago.

It hasn't been a first season in The National League to remember for The Spireites with only bottom club Braintree recording less wins, though John Sheridan is on track to steer his side away from a third successive relegation.

Since his appointment in January, the former Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday man has won four of his six matches in charge, including an impressive 1-0 win at promotion chasers AFC Fylde last weekend.

Sheridan, now in his second spell in charge having achieved promotion into League One in his first stint, has yet to see his side concede a league goal since returning, though comes up against the league's leading scorers on Saturday and a Town side who haven't failed to score in their last 12 matches.

The Derbyshire club currently sit 19th, two points above the relegation zone, though a win could take them above five teams, while a third away win a row for Town could lift them back into the Play-Off places.

While Chesterfield have recorded the most draws in the division (15), Town have shared the spoils just once in the 16 games since the sides met for the first time at The CNG Stadium.

Highlights

Despite the ten places between them in the standings, only one point separates the sides over the last 15 matches, with The Spireites suffering defeat one just one more occasion than Town all season.

Sheridan's side have won just four league matches on home soil this season, with only Maidstone netting less goals, though Saturday's opponents have suffered defeat in just one of the last ten at The Proact.

A minute's applause will be held before kick-off for Chesterfield and England legend Gordan Banks, who sadly passed away last week.
