Sutton 2 Town 1

5 January 2019

Another late goal meant Town came away from Gander Green Lane empty handed as Harry Beautyman's 82nd minute winner secured a 2-1 win for Sutton United.

A spectacular curling finish from George Thomson on the hour mark had pulled Town level after Jonah Ayunga had opened the scoring in the 18th minute, but it was the hosts who came away with the win thanks to Beautyman's finish.

Simon Weaver named the same starting line-up as at Halifax on New Years' Day, though Liam Kitching returned to the bench following suspension.

Town almost opened up their opponents in the opening exchanges, but it was James Belshaw who had to make the first save, keeping out Tom Bolarinwa's long range effort after eight minutes.

Sutton took the lead 19 minutes into the contest as Beautyman's free kick was glanced into the bottom corner by the head of Ayunga.

Town tried to pull level from range as Thomson produced a save from Ross Worner, though Lloyd Kerry could not do the same with his curling effort.

Sutton went close to netting a second in the latter stages of the half as Craig Eastmond aimed for the bottom corner, but the Sutton Captain's shot was deflected behind.

The hosts made a quick start to the half with Gimy Toure firing a powerful early shot over the bar, though Town were level on the hour mark.

Just inside the Sutton area, Thomson shifted the ball onto his left foot and expertly curled over Worner and into the top corner.

Town threatened again soon after finding the net, though Leesley's cross was just out of Beck's reach after a fine passing move.

Despite the improvement, it was Sutton who would strike next as Beautyman guided the ball into the bottom corner from close range.

Weaver's side came agonizingly close to levelling in stoppage time as Thomson almost floated the ball over Worner who had punched clear, only to see the ball headed from the line.

Beck followed up but was denied by Worner at his near post as Town were made to suffer defeat thanks to another late goal.
