U17s Progress to Next Round of Cup

28 January 2019

Town U17's progressed into the Second Round of cup as they beat previously unbeaten Rothwell Town 4-3 on penalties after a very entertaining game finished 2-2.

Town started brightly and took the lead when Joe Gosling found space in the box to cut onto his left foot and smash the ball into the top corner.

Rothwell equalised on the break when their midfielder found a gap at the edge of the box and squeezed a shot past Bailey Calvert in the Harrogate goal.

The young Town side stepped their game up after conceding and nearly went back in front when a brilliant passing move was nearly finished off by Adam Kellett, but his shot was somehow tipped onto the post by the Rothwell keeper.

Gosling nearly doubled his tally before halftime when he managed to make space for himself inside the box following another flowing town move.

He couldn't repeat his earlier finish though, as the goalkeeper made another finger tip save to touch it onto the bar before the break.

The second half started evenly, but it was Rothwell that took the lead when a 25 yard strike found its way into the top corner.

Town started applying pressure as soon as they conceded and were level within minutes when they were awarded a penalty.

Gosling stepped up confidently and tucked it away neatly to level the score.

The biggest chance of the half came from a Tom Johnson corner that found the head of Lewis Dobson in the six yard box, but he couldn't keep his header down in what was the final chance in 90 minutes.

Town scored their first two penalties through Josh Wicks and Johnson, before Lucas Abusin saw his effort saved; but Bailey Calvert stopped Rothwell going in front with a great save low to his right.

Harry Lee and finally Gosling scored Town's next two and the tie was won when the Rothwell attacker blazed his final penalty over the bar.
