Town 0 Salford 1

27 March 2019

Devonte Redmond's second half penalty proved decisive as Salford City came out on top in Wednesday night's televised clash at The CNG Stadium.

Emmanuel Dieseruvwe had gone down under Ryan Fallowfield's challenge, with Town unable to recover and breach a defence that had gone five matches without shipping a goal.

Simon Weaver made one change to his starting line-up, breaking a sequence of seven unchanged starting line-ups as Joe Leesley replaced George Thomson.

The first chance fell the way of the visitors 16 minutes in when Nathan Pond headed a free kick towards goal, only for James Belshaw to palm over the bar.

Town responded with a chance of their own as Jack Emmett released Ryan Fallowfield, who tried to square for Mark Beck, though Christopher Neal stuck out a leg to intercept the pull back.

The returning Leesley tried his luck with an ambitious 25 yarder on his right foot, but was a fraction too high as Town finished the half strongly.

With ten minutes of the half remaining Leesley's free kick was met by Warren Burrell, but the defender couldn't direct his attempt either side of Neal who claimed.

A better chance fell the way of Beck five minutes later when Fallowfield flashed a ball across the face of goal, but Town's number nine couldn't get enough on his header to put his side ahead.

Despite the strong finish from Town, Salford started the second half brighter, forcing an incredible doube save from Belshaw who twice denied Carl Piergianni at the far post.

Two minutes later The Ammies were awarded a penalty when Diesurevwe went down under the challenge of Fallowfield, allowing Redmond to step up and open the scoring.

Jack Muldoon almost came up with an equaliser in the 70th minute, but couldn't guide Leesley's cross under the bar, moments before substitute George Thomson's header also cleared the goal after Kelvin Langmead's flick on.

Town threw men forward in the hope of an equaliser, but Salford hung on to their sixth consecutive clean sheet with Liam Hogan and Lois Maynard making crucial late headers.
