Town 2 Maidstone 2

30 March 2019

Harrogate Town came from behind to secure a point against a resilient Maidstone United, with a Jack Muldoon penalty giving Town a share of the points.

Mark Beck put his side ahead, but the impressive Justin Amaluzor struck either side of the interval for the relegation threatened club.

Simon Weaver made one change to the starting line up that were defeated by Salford City earlier in the week as Liam Agnew came in for the injured Jack Emmett; the midfielder's sixth start of the campaign.

The first action of the game came in the second minute as the visiting keeper Chris Lewington handled the ball outside of the box, resulting in an early yellow card and a freekick for Joe Leesley, but unfortunately he couldn't find a man in yellow and black in the box.

Maidstone, who had lost their last five away league games, were in desperate need for a win as, if they lost and Boreham Wood gained a win against Barrow then relegation to the National League South would be confirmed.

Blair Turgott seemed inspired to get a must needed win for his side as he got into space on the right and ran past the Harrogate defence to whip in a cross across goal, but there was no team mate in purple to tap it in.

In the 21st minute Town who grabbed the first goal of the afternoon when a right footed cross from Leesley picked out Callum Howe at the far post, who nodded it towards Beck to finish from close range and claim his tenth of the season.

In the 37th minute the pacey Turgott broke through the Town defence and whipped a dangerous cross towards Amaluzor who got a header away, but was too far out to guide the effort on target and challenge James Belshaw.

In the 43rd minute, Beck nearly had his 11th goal of the season but was caught offside by the linemen.

After some good play from Town, Lloyd Kerry had an effort on goal which was guided in by the offside Beck much to the dismay of the Harrogate home support.

Town would go on to rue that decision as in 45th minute Amaluzor equalised for the away team.

Amaluzor curled a wonderful effort into the top left-hand corner past the leaping Belshaw; only the fifth time this season that The Stones have equalised after falling behind.

Knowing they were playing for their National League status, Maidstone looked like the livelier of the two sides in the opening exchanges of the second half, with goal scorer Amaluzor and Turgott continuing to look lively.

In the 52nd minute Amaluzor's hard work paid off, a well-played pass from the Stones' midfield released the inspired Amaluzor who struck an effort across goal and into the bottom corner.

But that lead didn't last for long, ten minutes later the home side were awarded a penalty as Muldoon was brought down in the box by Rob Swaine, he stepped up and slotted his effort home to grab his 17th goal of the season.

In 70th minute, Leesley took aim from 30+ yards out and nearly pulled off an impressive effort which went straight over the visiting keeper but unfortunately for the skilful winger the effort rocketed into the bar.

Kerry came to the rescue in the 76th minute as Maidstone pulled off an impressive piece of play just outside the Town box, the Town midfielder kept full tabs on the ball and managed to get the ball away to safety for the Town defence.

Unfortunately, Town couldn't find a winner in the final 10 minutes, keeping them in sixth place in the table with five games to go.
