Town 2 Chorley 0

3 September 2019

Town returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win against Chorley at The CNG Stadium thanks to goals at the start of each half from Brendan Kiernan and Jack Muldoon.

Simon Weaver opted to make a couple of changes to the starting line-up with George Smith being recalled and Jon Stead making his first start of the season following Saturday's disappointing 2-0 defeat against Dover Athletic.

Any nerves in the Town side were swiftly eased though when Kiernan struck from just inside the box following good work from Warren Burrell and Ryan Fallowfield.

Chorley, who had come into the game without a win this season and on the back of two consecutive heavy away defeats, continued to work hard and their effort was rewarded when Chris Holroyd forced James Belshaw into a reaction save after 21 minutes.

Despite their dominance in terms of possession and territory Town failed to build on their early lead over the remainder of their first half, toiling to little avail with Fallowfield's drive from distance on the stroke of half-time the only further test for Billy Crellin in the Chorley goal.

The half time break sparked life into Town however and they doubled their lead on 47 minutes when Muldoon headed from short range to end his run of games without a goal.

Chorley's best effort of the second half came when Belshaw tipped over from Josh O'Keefe but in truth it was a comfortable night for Town's ‘keeper and defence.

Town suffered a blow midway through the half when captain Josh Falkingham was forced to leave the field through injury on what was a busy night for both physios.

The final stages saw a debut for loan signing Jack Diamond and his good work down the left hand side almost resulted in a third goal, with Jack Emmett seeing his goal bound shot blocked.

The victory sees Town move up to twelfth in the table and positioned just three points off the playoff positions ahead of Saturday's long trip south to face Torquay United.
