Darlington 0 Town 2

11 January 2020

A combination of Jack Diamond's first goal for Town and Lloyd Kerry's strike secured progress to the last 16 of the FA Trophy away at Darlington.

Weaver made six changes for the short trip with a first start handed to new signing Owen Gallacher who had joined on a month-long loan from Nottingham Forest.

The left back was involved from the beginning, providing an important tackle as Justin Donawa looked to threaten towards goal.

Town's first attack came just before the 10th minute. Winger Diamond beat the Darlington right back to play an inviting ball into the box. Although in a promising area, no Town man could get on the end of the delivery.

Darlington captain Stephen Thompson had a half chance minutes later when he found space outside the Town box. The midfielder tried his luck but his effort was well over the bar.

A quick move from Town nearly brought the first goal of the game. The ball got shifted out wide to Ryan Fallowfield who fizzed his cross towards Mark Beck. He managed to guide the ball goal wards with a slight deflection forcing the ball out for a Town corner.

Donawa looked set to have an effort on goal following a good move forward from the home side. Gallacher's tackle just before the attacker pulled the trigger sent the ball away from danger.

Town had a great chance to grab the first goal of the contest when Diamond beat the offside trap. His cross took a deflection and looped in the air, eventually falling for Brendan Kiernan who volleyed wide of the target.

Only a couple of minutes later Diamond opened the scoring for Town in the 32nd minute. The winger chased a loose ball, pressurising the Darlington defender to lose his footing.

Diamond capitalised on the error, cooling slotting past the keeper from just inside the box to open his Town account.
The home side were determined to not let the game drift away from them, forcing Joe Cracknell into good save with his feet to deny Donawa, who was proving to be the main threat for the home side.
With the half-time whistle approaching, Town pressed on. Kerry played a fine first time pass which sent Fallowfield down the right with space ahead of him. He collected the ball and hit a low shot across goal, just missing the far post.

Chris Elliot was forced into a strong double save in added time as George Thomson's long range effort dropped for Kerry with the keeper doing well to deny the visitors.
Town started to second-half strongly with Kiernan first having an opportunity of his own before setting up Thomson who hit the post with his first-time effort.
Cracknell was then forced into action at the other end, producing a top save to deny Thompson from distance.
Kiernan was next to strike the woodwork. His dipping half-volley left the keeper frozen as the ball rattled the cross bar as Town pressed for the second.
Approaching the 70th minute, Darlington started to pile bodies forward. Donawa's low cross went all the way through the Town box to Thompson whose side footed strike couldn't find the target.
Minutes later Cracknell was needed to keep out yet another Thompson effort as the home-side began to grow in confidence.
Despite the mounting pressure from Darlington, Town held strong and got their rewards five minutes from full-time.
Kerry drove with the ball to the edge of the box and took aim, beating the keeper to put Town two up and secure their place in the last 16 of the FA Trophy.
