Notts County 0-1 Town - We're Going to Wembley, Again!

22 September 2020

Harrogate Town are heading for Wembley for the second time after Will Smith's header booked a place in the FA Trophy Final.

In a first half dominated by the visitors, Smith glanced home Aaron Martin's flick on in what proved to be the decisive moment as Notts County were overcome at Meadow Park.

Concord Rangers lie in wait in the final of the competition that provides Town the chance to lift the FA Trophy for the first time, the date of which is to be announced.

Simon Weaver made one change from Saturday's clash with Walsall as Brendan Kiernan came in for his second start of the season, replacing Mark Beck.

Jack Muldoon was the first to threaten for Town, finding room to run at the County defence and see his low strike deflect wide for the first of many Town corners in the first half.

George Thomson forced the first save of the evening, cutting inside on his left foot and firing into the arms of Sam Slocombe after half an hour.

The Notts 'keeper made another important stop four minutes later as Connor Hall brought the ball down in a crowded area and sent a right footed shot towards the bottom corner, only for Slocombe to deny the centre half.

It was looking like Town's first half dominance would go unrewarded as Kiernan shot just the wrong side of the post after Slocombe had again denied Thomson with only a minute to play.

Just as the Fourth Official had signalled the amount of first half stoppage time to be added, Smith headed Town into a deserved lead, getting just enough contact on Aaron Martin's headed flick on to nestle the ball into the corner and out of the reach of a scrambling Slocombe.

The hosts made a bright start to the second half as Jake Reeves forced an early save from Joe Cracknell, before a Ryan Fallowfield last ditch challenge prevented Kyle Wootton getting his effort on target.

Town soon reminded the Magpies of the threat they pose though as Hall went close for a second time, heading Thomson's deep corner back across the face of goal.

Neal Ardley opted to roll the dice with just over 20 minutes to play and his side trailing by a goal, introducing Elisha Sam and Enzio Boldewijn in the hope of forcing an equaliser.

No dramatic ending would materialse though, as Town held firm to keep their clean sheet in tact and book a second Wembley appearance.
