"It does feel like another new chapter" - Simon Weaver pre Rochdale

5 August 2021

Watch the Gaffer's pre-match press conference ahead Saturday's season opener against Rochdale…

The Gaffer on preparations for Rochdale's visit…

Gone really well this week. The lads had Wednesday off but the excitement is growing 100%. You can see on people's faces that we're nearly there for our first game of the season. It doesn't get much bigger than Rochdale who will bring a fantastic following with them.

The feelings after confirmation fans will attend for Saturday's fixture…

Yeah it is excitement and relief. There was a bit of anxiety creeping in and we were all wanting the statement to go out once the safety checks had been done. There's been a build up of nerves but now the news has come through, we're delighted to welcome all our fans and the Rochdale contingent who should all add to a big game atmosphere.

On our opening fixture being another new chapter for the club…

It was a new chapter last season but it does feel like another new chapter again. We'll be faced with different challenges of the away followings and also going to some big stadiums which will be full on some occasions. It's a different set of challenges but knowing this group, the existing lads and the new and in some cases experienced players, they'll all thrive in these type of set ups.

On focus sharpening as we get closer to kick-off…

Yeah it does. It's not a revamp job of coming in everyday and reinventing or defining, this is just focusing on the next couple of days, enjoying the excitement and using that as fuel to get at Rochdale in the best way possible.

On team selection for Saturday…

There's a couple decisions to be made, to be honest. It'll probably go down to the wire. That's because we've got a squad with 16 outfield players and two goalkeepers and all could well be in their rights to be thinking they'd be starting on Saturday. It's a strong squad to choose from, a small one but that's how we like it.

They've acquitted themselves brilliantly and there'll just be one player who misses out on the matchday squad.
That'll be the hardest conversation but it's a long season and we want everyone to feel wanted and valued and everyone will play a part, that's for sure.

On what the Gaffer is hoping for this weekend…

Just togetherness. It's the first time in our history where we can have home and away fans enjoying the Football League in Harrogate.

We want that partisan support from the away following, it helps to create an atmosphere but one thing is for sure, we want Harrogate Town fans behind the players because that unity helps manage the players excitement and confidence come matchday. The fans are a massive part of our team and hopefully they'll be behind us.
