"We know we have to be bang at it 3pm on Saturday" - Thirlwell pre Exeter

26 August 2021

Watch Paul Thirlwell's pre-match press conference ahead of Exeter's visit to the EnviroVent Stadium on Saturday…

Thirs on the last two peformances…

They were really good performances and naturally with the lay off with covid, it wasn't ideal for ourselves but first and foremost the lads were well. A couple had suffered but have now managed to get themselves back into training.

We didn't know how the performances were going to go but with the group of lads we've got, we knew they'd be in good condition and they've been outstanding in the last two games.

On getting the first clean sheet of the season against Leyton Orient…

Really pleasing. We don't want to put too much emphasis on clean sheets as much as we do with scoring, we have to score but as a team it was certainly our best defensive display and on top of that we got the clean sheet which the lads fully deserved on the night.

On comparing last season's away performance against Leyton Orient to Tuesday night…

I think at times last year we were a bit naïve. We played against a good side who are strong at home but we wanted to go to Orient and show signs that we've grown up in a sense of having a year in this league. We played them in the National League as well when they were really strong so we wanted to turn up and really keep the crowd quiet as much as we possibly could.

We started the game ever so well and managed to get two goals in the first half but I think getting the first one inside 10 minutes really settled us down and quieted the crowd, making it difficult for  them.

On whether he thinks we've been more ruthless in front of goal…

It's early days but we'd like to think so. The strikers we've brought in have been for that reason and they've all contributed on the pitch and at the training ground, pushing the other lads who have had the starting places.
Luke (Amrstrong) got his goals the other night, Pato (Alex Pattison) has got his goals and all the new lads have settled in really well. The lads who were already here have taken them in.

On the new lads integrating into the squad…

It's pleasing. We look at the likes of Shez (Nathan Sheron) who wasn't in the squad the other day but he's come in and done ever so well. He's going to be pushing and it has a knock on effect on the rest of the squad.

Everyone has to be at it and although we don't have a massive squad, we want good competition all over the pitch.

On facing Exeter on Saturday…

We're expecting a really, really tough game. They're a really good side and notoriously up in and around the play offs. I don't think they'll be looking at this season thinking any different. They had a disappointing result against Orient but then a really good result against Bristol Rovers who again, are a side who is expected to be up and around the top at the business end of the season.

It's pats on the back for the other night but we know we have to be bang at it 3pm on Saturday and with this group of lads, we will be.
