Town 1 - 0 Mansfield Town - Martin strikes earns another home win

23 February 2021

An Aaron Martin volley just seconds into the second half was enough to earn Town all three points against Mansfield.

After an uneventful opening half the strike was precisely the boost Town needed to go on an take all three points.

The goal also saw Town continue their positive recent home form that has seen them take 10 points from the last five games at the Envirovent Stadium.

Simon Weaver named another unchanged line-up but made two changes to the bench with Ryan Fallowfield and Dan Jones coming in for Jake Lawlor and Brendan Kiernan.

Stags' boss Nigel Clough made one change to the side that started against Cambridge United with Jason Law replacing Stephen Quinn. Kellan Gordon also returned to bench in place of Jason Law.

Town were almost caught cold in the opening minute when an errant pass fell straight to Ollie Clarke but James Belshaw was alert enough to thwart the danger.

Both sides looking to rebound from disappointing defeats at the weekend but neither managed to find their groove during the early stages.

On the half-hour mark Belshaw was again forced into action when he palmed away Stephen McLaughlin's free-kick from the edge of the area. From the resulting corner Farrend Rawson headed powerfully but failed to find the direction needed to tests Town's ‘keeper.

Town's brightest moment of the goalless opening half resulted from Josh March's solo run and shot that saw Aidan Stone smartly deflect wide.

Whatever words were said at half-time though had an immediate impact.

Less than ten seconds after the restart Town were ahead. A hopeful ball forward was only half cleared and Martin pounced to smartly volley home beyond the helpless Stone for his fifth league goal of the campaign.

With their tails up Town sensed the three points were there for the taking and a flick on from man of the moment Martin freed up Josh McPake but his shot from distance lacked control.

Weaver made a number of substitutions shortly after the hour mark which included a welcome return to the side for Dan Jones after a long absence with a groin injury.

The changes ensured Town continued to maintain the energy and work rate that saw them the more threatening of the two sides as the game continued to progress.

The visitors also made a handful of changes as they looked to grab something from the game but the Town defence were rarely troubled with Belshaw also in authoritative form.

And despite six minutes of injury time being signalled by the referee Weaver's side held firm to condemn Mansfield to just their third away defeat of the season and move themselves within six points of the playoff positions.
