Jack Muldoon pre Southend - We want to set our bar as high as we can

26 March 2021

Ahead of our match with Southend United on Saturday, we sat down to chat with our top scorer Jack Muldoon to discuss his recent time on the subs bench, memories of the reverse fixture against Southend United and what the squad are aiming for in the remaining games of the campaign.

Muldoon on spending time on the bench…

Obviously you want to play as much as you can. I played against Salford and scored and then after the Tranmere Rovers game, the Gaffer brought Marchy [March] in and to be fair, he'd come off the bench and scored against Tranmere.

He got going then and I felt after that game I probably deserved a rest to some extent because obviously performances on the pitch, if they're not right then it's about the team not the player. When the Gaffer pulled me in it was probably right to rest me so I was fine about it.

On keeping a positive attitude…

It wasn't so much about changing the Gaffer's mind but more so keeping a good attitude and personality and obviously keep training as good as you can.

You can't throw your toys out the pram because it's not going to get you anywhere first and foremost, not at most clubs and especially not here.

On making an impact from the subs bench…

There's not much I change about my game but it's about bringing as much energy as possible. If you're coming on it's probably because either your mate in front of you is tired or they're not bringing much at the time during the game.

It's what fresh legs are for and what subs do. You've got to bring energy but at the same time a bit of composure as well.

On our 4-0 win against Southend at the start of the season…

It was a fantastic game and I think we kept the momentum from the last season. The majority of lads who started against Southend played in our last game of the previous season.

The lads were on form and we had a bit of luck come our way to a certain degree in some areas with refereeing decisions and stuff but we took our chances.

On expecting a much tighter game this time around…

It will definitely be a tighter game, especially with the pitches not being as good as they were at the start of the season. We're going to be expecting a tough game, which we do anyway against every team so we'll be right at it on Saturday.

On aims for the rest of the season…

We've all got our eyes on the play-offs. If we don't make the play-offs then we can still say well done for the season but we want it and we're not going to just turn up to training to play a bit of footy, that's not what we're about.  We want to set our bar as high as we can and I'm sure Thirs and Gaffer will be thinking the same.
