We've been chatting to winger Simon Power about his recent goal scoring form from dead ball situations and how he's now looking to get an extended run in the side…
Power on his three goals from free-kicks this season…
Growing up I've always been a good striker of the ball and I've had power in my shots. It's (free-kicks) something I've been working on a lot this season but haven't really had the chance to show it except for the one I got against Darlington in preseason. From then on, it was sort of my spot to take free-kicks along with George Thomson and then I took my chance against Wrexham and then last week against Walsall in similar style.
On his free-kick routine with Diamond which has seen him score against Wrexham and Walsall…
It was more so spur of the moment. In the Wrexham game, the free-kick was only about 20 yards out and probably too close for me to shoot over the wall which is what I had planned on doing, but he (Jack Diamond) came over to me and thought the same. We decided to think how could we make it work and we noticed the gap between the wall and their runner so he laid it inside and I ran and smashed it home.
It was a great feeling to score. I hadn't got a goal in the league since last season away at Crawley so it was a long time coming but it was nice to get off the mark against Walsall.
On the need to be patient this season and wait for the opportunity…
Yeah it has been needed. It's been a difficult one as I started off so well against Rochdale but then I got Covid and was really affected by it. Then the introduction of Jack Diamond to the team who's done very well as well, it's meant I've had to be patient, work hard and keep my head down and train as there's no room for being disappointed as you don't want to be sulking around the training ground. I've worked hard and my time has come now so it's up to me now as I've set the standard, so I've got to keep it up.
On what he needs to do to make that position in the team his own…
I've just got to keep my performance levels up like it has been in the last couple of games. It's all about consistency really and getting more goals and get my stats up I suppose. We've been really good in the final third this season scoring goals and I just want to get my name onto that list now. I've scored two now but I'd like to get more assists as well.
