Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 Town - Heavy Defeat Sees Town Progress As Runners Up

9 November 2021

Harrogate Town had to settle for second place in their Papa John's Trophy group as Sheffield Wednesday ran out 4-0 winners in the battle of the already qualified teams at Hillsborough.

Saido Berahino had Darren Moore's side ahead at the break and this was added to early in the second half by George Byers and Sylla Sow, leaving Town wondering how they didn't take some of their first half chances.

The final blow came as Connor Hall was shown a straight red card for conceding a spot kick, that Korede Adedoyin converted.

Simon Weaver made four changes from Saturday's Emirates FA Cup win over Wrexham as Ryan Fallowfield, Danilo Orsi, Jack Muldoon and Simon Power made the starting line-up.

It was an attacking selection from the Harrogate boss and his team started on the front foot with Orsi collecting Jack Diamond's through ball and forcing the first save of the evening from Joe Wildsmith.

The hosts were next to go close as Massimo Luongo robbed possession on the edge of the Town box and curled the ball onto the base of the post.

Wednesday took the lead in the 17th minute when a cross from the left found it's way to Jack Hunt at the back post, the home skipper showing good composure to roll the ball to Berahino to slide into an empty net.

It was Town's turn to hit the post next as Alex Pattison carried the ball forward from midfield and found Diamond, whose finish was blocked before being pounced upon by Orsi to clip the frame of the goal with his effort.

Town were getting closer to an equaliser and nearly found it when Lewis Page's marauding run was turned goalwards by Aaron Martin, but trickled just wide of the target and couldn't be turned home by Pattison.

There was more action at either end of the pitch as the half drew to a close with Mark Oxley denying Sylla Sow, before Wildsmith kept out attempts from Martin and Pattison, though the first 45 minutes ended with just the one goal seperating the sides.

Harrogate made a good start to the second half, but still couldn't find a way past Wildsmith with Orsi and Diamond having effort saved, the latter a well hit effort after a jinking run.

It was Wednesday who would get the next goal though with their first meaningful attack of the half, Ciaran Brennan finding the head of Byers who glanced past Oxley to double his side's lead.

Warren Burrell almost came up with an instant response as his header was kept out by Wildsmith, as was Pattison's low drive seconds later, but it was soon three for the hosts and game over.

Sow was released on the counter attack and was allowed the freedom to cut inside and shoot into the far corner, all but sealing Wednesday's place as Group H winners.

A short back pass from Page in the 67th minute saw Adedoyin race through on goal, only to be tripped by Connor Hall, who was shown a straight red card.

The Wednesday substitute took the spot kick himself, waiting for Oxley to commit before dinking the ball home.

It could have been five as Sow was again played through on goal, but Oxley made himself big to come out on top of that and keep the score at four.
