Swindon Preview - A look at our first clash with the Robins

25 November 2021

Town are back on their travels this Saturday hoping to make it three wins on the bounce on the road in League Two.

The 2-0 win away at Carlisle United on Tuesday saw Simon Weaver's men move up to sixth place in the table.

And Weaver's side make the long trip to the County Ground to face Swindon in what will be the first ever meeting between the two sides, with Town going into the game sitting just three points behind their opponents.

Our opponents

Swindon are currently sitting pretty in third after suffering relegation from League One last season.
They have accrued 32 points so far and have tasted defeat just once in their previous ten outings. Their rise up the table has been propelled by their stellar away form, while at home they have taken nine points from eight games.

Ones to watch

Forwards Jack Payne and Tyreece Simpson, the latter on loan from Ipswich Town, lead the way, both having netted seven goals so far this season.

The pair have been well supported by Harry McKirdy, who has four goals and three assists to his name, and midfielder Jonathan Williams who has notched three goals in just six league starts.

Midfielder Louis Reed has been a near ever present since arriving from Peterborough in anchoring the midfield alongside Ben Gladwin.

In defence Dion Conroy has been the pick this season in a unit that has conceded at a rate of only a goal a game.

The man in charge

Following a tumultuous period off the pitch, Ben Garner was appointed as Manager by new owner Clem Morfuni in the summer. Garner replaced previous incumbent John McGreal, who was in charge for just 30 days due to the uncertainty around the club off the pitch prior to the ownership change.

Garner has previously been a coach at Crystal Palace and West Brom as well as having one previous managerial role, at Bristol Rovers spanning parts of the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons.

The Robins were formed as Swindon AFC back in 1879 before settling on Swindon Town in 1883.
Initially members of the Western and Southern League they were elected to the Football League in 1920, beginning in the third tier before securing their first promotion in 1963 to Division Two.

The club shocked Arsenal in the 1969 League Cup final to secure their first major trophy, but suffered subsequent relegations to end up back in the bottom division in the early 1980's.

With former Manchester United player Lou Macari at the helm the club earned back to back promotions in the mid-1980's to return to the Division Two but were denied a further promotion in 1990 due to breaching Football League regulations.

Future Chelsea and England manager Glenn Hoddle finally took Town to the top flight in 1993 but they were relegated at the first attempt before suffering a second successive relegation a season later. Although immediately bouncing back they were relegated again in 2000 and have remained in the bottom two divisions over the past two decades.

Team news

Town will be without their injured defensive trio of Rory McArdle, Will Smith and Ryan Fallowfield, and forward Aaron Martin, but will hope skipper Josh Falkingham is passed fit after coming off during the midweek win at Carlisle.
