Walsall 1-3 Town - Power, Diamond and Armstrong on Target in Walsall Win

13 November 2021

Goals from Simon Power, Jack Diamond and Luke Armstrong capped an impressive away performance as Town recorded a 3-1 win at Walsall.

Power's unstoppable free kick sent Town into half time ahead and with a lead to hold, which was added to in the second half through Jack Diamond's finish on the counter attack and a goal on his return from injury from Luke Armstrong.

Kieran Phillips pulled a goal back in the 87th minute, but it wasn't enough to put Town's three points in doubt, with Simon Weaver's side moving back into the League Two Play-Off positions.

The Harrogate Manager made two changes from Tuesday night's trip to Sheffield Wednesday as Nathan Sheron replaced Ryan Fallowfield at right back and Armstrong returned in place of Jack Muldoon.

Matt Taylor was without Captain Joss Labadie who missed out through suspension, though there was a place in the Walsall line-up for former Town favourite Brendan Kiernan.

After an opening 20 minutes with few chances, Town were awarded a free kick 30 yards out as Power was brought down from behind when lining up a strike at goal.

Just like against Wrexham last weekend, from the set piece Jack Diamond teed up Power, who this time bent the ball round the wall and into the bottom right corner to put his side ahead.

Kiernan was having an intruiging battle with Sheron on the Walsall left wing and came as close as any player in red to equalise in the first half, cutting inside and forcing Mark Oxley into action, the Town keeper holding a well hit effort.

Walsall continued to probe before the break, but were constantly thwarted by a combination of Connor Hall and Warren Burrell, who were able to clear numerous dangerous deliveries into the box.

Walsall enjoyed the majority of possession at the start of the second half, but were hit on the counter attack just after the hour mark as Diamond was played through from Orsi, running from inside his own half to beat the offside trap and slide the ball under the advancing Carl Rushworth.

Oxley was needed to keep Town's two goal lead in tact in the 68th minute, racing out from his line to close down Kieran Phillips and get a big hand on the ball to deny the Walsall substitute.

Hopes of a Walsall comeback were ended eight minutes from time as Alex Pattison carried the ball past Stephen Ward and send a low cross that Armstrong gladly bundled into the back of the net.

The hosts didn't give up though, getting their names on the score sheet in the 87th minute through Phillips, who followed up a long range shot that had been kept out by Oxley, though it was too little too late and Town went home with all three points.
