"The whole group itself has impressed me" - Rory McArdle pre Newport

10 September 2021

We chat to no nonsense centre-half Rory McArdle about our start to the season, what's impressed him since arriving in the summer and how expects a “difficult” match against Newport on Friday night…

McArdle on our start to the season…

It's been good. You look at the league table and it doesn't lie, we are where we are and it it's thoroughly deserved but we're not getting carried away with it. It's early days but we wanted to hit the ground running and that's exactly what we've done so we've got to concentrate on what we've been doing well, what's got us to where we are at the minute and enjoy it but equally, not get ahead of ourselves and instead just keep going as we are.

On what's impressed him since signing in the summer…

The whole group itself has impressed me. From me coming in on the first day, everybody made me feel so welcome it felt like I'd been here much longer than just a few days. It sounds quite simple but it did feel like that.

It does help when you come into a new environment when you're not sure what to expect. Everyone is really fit, really intense and the standards are there. If anyone dips below the standards you get found out and you get told so there's no slacking and that's worked in our favour for the start that we've had.

On whether he feels his experience has had a positive impact on the squad…

Hopefully. It's not something I've thought of directly that I need to say anything in particular, it's just probably just general things from the defensive side of it. Hopefully from how I try to conduct myself I try to lead from example a bit and if anybody notices little things like that then hopefully that can help the group.

Equally for me coming into the group, I'm learning as well. It's not a case of me just thinking I can pass my experience on here, there and everywhere. Equally I'm happy to listen to everyone and for them to help me as well so as long as we're having that success, that's important for the group and long may that continue.

On what he feels he learned since joining the club…

Even when you come into a group and think training is going alright, it only takes one sloppy 10 or 15 minutes to make you lose your way a bit. It's important that regardless of how long you're training for; whether it's an hour, hour and half, two hours or double sessions you've got to be on it.

It can be a little passing drill that people take for granted and you see with a little drill like that someone always makes a sloppy pass so it's important not to take things for granted and you do all the little things properly and keep building on it each day.

On the challenge Newport bring…

Over recent years I've had tough and difficult games against them. You look at the success they've had and they of course reached the play offs last year. This year I'm sure they'll be expecting to do at least the same. In the cups they've had a few runs here and there so we know it'll be a tough game.

They've had slight change in play which I think the majority of clubs have had this season so there will be a few new things that we'll need to look out for but first and foremost we have to make sure we conduct ourselves properly. We know full well if we're not at it we could find it difficult so we'll look to start well, cause them a few problems as well as being on our toes to snuff out their threats.
