Colchester Preview - A look at the U's visit to the EnviroVent Stadium

1 April 2022

We welcome Colchester United to The Envirovent Stadium this week as we head towards the final weeks of the 2021/22 season.

And Simon Weaver's side will be hoping to take the momentum from the 3-0 win at Scunthorpe a week ago to ensure a positive end to Town's second season in League Two.

Our opponents

The U's sit in 20th place in League Two on 42 points, eight points above the relegation zone.

However, a run of just two defeats in seven games, including an impressive 1-0 win against Tranmere last weekend, has moved them clear of immediate danger.

On the road this season they are averaging a point a game, with five wins from their 19 fixtures away from Layer Road.

Previous meetings

Town fell to an 86th minute Sylvester Jasper strike earlier in the season, with the late goal putting a dent in the excellent start to the 2021/22 season.

The spoils were shared in 2020/21 with each side winning their home fixture. In late October Town were downed 2-1 with Jon Stead's netting a consolation following Callum Harriott and Ben Stevenson's strikes shortly after the break.

In the return game Town ran out comfortable 3-0 winners thanks to goals from Mark Beck, Will Smith and Josh McPake.

Ones to watch

Former Ipswich Town man Freddie Sears leads the scoring charts for Colchester, having netted 11 times since his summer move.

Alan Judge - Sears's former Portman Road teammate - has three goals and four assists this season, with young midfielder Noah Chilvers also hitting the target on three occasions.

Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu and Cole Skuse will anchor the midfield positions whilst Shamal George has had another solid season between the posts.

The club also brought in John Akinde from Gillingham and Owure Edwards on loan from Bristol City in the January window, both of whom have made noticeable impacts.

The man in charge

Wayne Brown is the man in charge and back at the helm on temporary basis for a second time following the departure of Haydn Mullins.

The former Maldon & Tiptree boss played for the U's between 2004 and 2007 and most recently coached the U23s squad before his appointment at Maldon & Tiptree.

The former centre half played for a number of clubs including Ipswich Town, Watford, Hull City and Leicester City before hanging up his boots in 2011 to focus on coaching.

Recent history

A long-time member of the Football League for most of their existence, Colchester have found themselves in League Two since suffering relegation from League One in 2016.

They did though spend two years in the Championship between 2006 and 2008, achieving a highest finish of 10th place before being relegated to League One after the 2007/08 season.

Their all-time appearance holder is Micky Cook, who featured over 600 times for the club in the 1970's and early 1980's, whilst Tony Adcock netted 149 times across two spells in the 1980's and 1990's.

Team news

Town go into the game without the quartet of Lewis Page, Josh Falkingham, Brahima Diarra and Lewis Richards, all of whom are sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Alex Pattison will undergo a late check after coming off in last Saturday's win at Scunthorpe.
