Walsall Preview - We look ahead to Saturday at The EnviroVent

17 March 2022

After a frustrating outcome on Tuesday evening which saw Town fall to a 2-0 defeat away to Tranmere, Simon Weaver's side are back on home turf this weekend and looking to get back to winning ways against Walsall.

Our opponents

Under the guidance of new manager Michael Flynn they have steered themselves clear of any relegation danger.

The Saddlers are now sitting in 14th spot on 46 points, two places and three points ahead of Town thanks to a run that has seen them defeated just once in eight games since the arrival of Flynn.

On their travels Walsall are averaging around a point per game, with four wins and 17 points from 18 games, finding the back of the net 13 times away from The Banks's Stadium.

Previous meetings

Town earned a resounding win earlier in the season as goals from Simon Power, Jack Diamond and Luke Armstrong set up a 3-1 away win, with Walsall grabbing a late Kieran Phillips consolation.

Honours were even last season with both fixtures ending in a stalemate.

In early September goals from Aaron Martin and Jack Muldoon put Town ahead in the first half in our first ever home match in the EFL, but a late Josh Gordon strike saw the game finish 2-2 with the return fixture ending goalless.

The man in charge

Flynn is the man in charge, having replaced Matt Taylor in mid-February with the club sliding perilously towards the relegation places.

Flynn was previously in charge at Newport County, where he led the side to a playoff appearance in 2018 as well as high-profile FA Cup runs where they accounted for both Leeds and Leicester.

During his playing career he made over 400 appearances for a number of clubs, notably for County as well as Wigan, Gillingham, Blackpool, Huddersfield and Bradford.

Ones to Watch

George Miller has netted 11 times this season on a year-long loan from Barnsley, whilst Connor Wilkinson is close behind on 9 goals.

Former Town forward Brendan Kiernan will also make a return to The Envirovent Stadium and sure to get a good reception following his part in the clubs promotion and FA Trophy winning seasons.

Defender Manny Monthe has become a fixture in the back four this season after arriving from Tranmere and midfielder Jack Earing is having a solid season.

Premier League- loanees Tyrese Shade (Leicester) and Reece Devine (Manchester United) will also be faces to look out for.

History

Walsall have spent the vast majority of their time in the third tier of English football, last playing in the Championship in the early 2000's. They were relegated to League Two at the end of the 2018/19 season and the past two seasons have seen them post mid-table finishes.

They moved to their current all-seater home, Banks's Stadium, in 1990 and posted a record attendance of 11,049 in 2004 against Rotherham. The all-time leader in appearances for the club is Jimmy Walker, who played 534 times across two spells, whilst Alan Buckley is their leading goalscorer, netting 202 times in the 1970's and 1980's.

Team News

Town will be without Lewis Page, with the full-back having been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury. Page is joined on the injury list by Josh Falkingham and Brahima Diarra, while Luke Armstrong serves his one match suspension for picking up two bookings at Tranmere.

Simon Weaver will hope to have Will Smith back available for selection after his recent illness.
