George Thomson named '22/23 Community Champion

7 July 2023

George Thomson has been named as the Professional Footballers’ Association Community Champion for his contribution to the Community Foundation activities during the 2022/23 Season.

The PFA Community Champion Awards recognise players contribution within the community and those who champion their club’s charity work throughout the season, whilst Thomson was a key figure in helping Town secure SkyBet League Two status on the pitch, he was helping to inspire others within the Foundation’s Health & Well-being programmes off it.

Throughout the season Thomson visited the ‘Town Runners’ group, talking to the participants about their running journey and offering some inspirational words to those who were just starting out on their own fitness journeys. Having faced his own battles with injuries and setbacks, Thomson’s empathy, humility and ability to relate to the participants made him an instant favourite amongst the group, who always looked forward to his visits.

“Me and Will Smith went down after showing an interest in that side of the Community work and there were loads of people there and that was brilliant to see!” Said Thomson.

“I think it’s great for your mental health, being around people with similar interests as it gets people talking, socialising and doing things they enjoy as well as making the most of being out in the fresh air.

“One of the nights was fancy dress which the group had organised themselves, which is another great side to what they are doing because it gets more people involved and is a bit of fun as well. It was great to see so many people come together and share their stories so a huge well done to all involved!”

Our Community Foundation’s Health & Wellbeing groups use the power of football and pull of Harrogate Town AFC to engage the local community, to fulfil our charitable aims of creating and maintaining a healthy, happy and connected Harrogate & District by offering opportunities to improve health & wellbeing, foster stronger, safer more active communities.

Head of Foundation Jill Stacey, added “We would like to place on record our thanks to George for his contribution and continued support towards to Community Foundation and our work. Its brilliant to have a player of George’s stature within the club engaging in our activities and taking an interest in the programmes & participants.

“He is a fans favourite at the EnviroVent so I’m sure the fan base will be thrilled to see him invest his own time into giving back to the local community.  We look forward to having the opportunity for George and other players to champion our work within Harrogate & District next season.”
